What an elevator pitch is
Based on the definition from Wikipedia, an elevator pitch is “an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project”. Why is it called an elevator pitch? The idea is to have a short summary of your business or product – a summary short enough to be able to deliver to someone between floors on an elevator.
How an elevator pitch will help your blog
- Your blog only has one chance to make a first impression. Having an elevator pitch all ready to go (and preferable memorized) will help you make the most of those first impressions.
- People have really short attention spans. Especially when they’re online. If you can’t tell how great your blog is in just a few words, more than likely, your readers are going to keep on moving.
- Giving people something short and easy to remember about your blog will help get them talking about it to their friends.
- You’ll save time in the long run. How many places online have you already encountered that ask you to give a brief description of your blog? Having your elevator pitch written already will make filling out those forms a snap. What about when you guest post? You’ll already have something to put in your brief bio at the end of your article. Then, there’s always having something to add to your letterhead and business cards if you’re using those.
Characteristics of a really great elevator pitch
- Relay what your blog is about
- Relay how your blog will benefit its readers and answer the question why they should check out your blog
- Take 5-30 seconds to read or say
- Be easy to remember
- Get and keep the attention of your audience – make it interesting to listen to!
A Helpful Tip from a Pro: Darren Rowse of Problogger.net (he’s one of THE go-to guy for profitable blogging) recommends having two elevator pitches – one that is just a few words long and takes about 5 seconds to say; the other is a few sentences long and can be used when you have a bit more time or space to tell about your blog.

It would be great to see you post some examples!
Rebekah, thanks for your questions! Here are a couple I’ve used:
“Affordable solutions for moms who blog”
“Here to help your blog succeed!”
“Because you can’t do it all alone… the community that helps promote YOUR blog”

Have you come up with a pitch for your blog?
Wow! Those are shorter than I thought they would be! I suppose mine would could simply be my tag line: Frugal, Green & Life In Between.
You can also make your elevator pitch longer, if you need it to be. Think about having 5-30 seconds to tell someone what your blog is about. You could try timing it to really see how short of a time period that is! Something short, catchy, and to the point is best… Yours sounds great!
“Using my mistakes as a tool; I will show you What NOT to Do” (or something like that). I seem to change it every time I write it. So I should sit and make it more concrete.
That’s a great motto for life in general, Jessica. 😉 Thanks for commenting!
Hi Tanya, this is really helpful. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful, Louisa – thanks for commenting!
My website name is Moms R Bomb and currently I have my slogan (pitch) “Your One Stop Shop for Savings, WAH Jobs and much more!” Do you have any tips or suggestions on what could be done different with that slogan or does anyone for that matter have any suggestions?
