There are tactics and techniques that work particularly well in small niche blogging. A small niche tends to have a smaller audience that’s better connected, with just a few marketers with large sites or lists. There’s also often less information to go around, which makes unique opinions and techniques much more valuable.
Here are three proven tactics for bringing traffic to a blog in a small, targeted niche.
Ask Your Readers to Promote Your Info
In small niches, people are much more likely to know other people who share similar interests. People interested in fishing know others who are interested in fishing; people interested in smoothie recipes also know other people who like smoothies, and so on.
One powerful tactic, then, is to ask your audience to promote your blog for you. If you have great information that’s really helped people out, many of them will be more than happy to do this.
If you’re promoting to a non-technical audience, make sure to make your instructions on how to do it as simple as possible. Walk them step-by-step through the process of sharing about your blog – you might even consider having a page set up on your blog exclusively to share these steps.
Guest Blogging
Guest blogging is both easier and more effective in a small niche.
Β In larger markets, prominent bloggers get approached a lot by guest bloggers. Unless you know them personally, you have a good chance of just being tuned down – or never even responded to.Β Remember, they’re busy people!
In a smaller market, however, prominent bloggers are much more receptive. They’re often very happy to connect with up-and-coming marketers.
All you need to do is establish a bit of reputation for yourself by blogging for a few weeks before approaching an existing blogger.
Approach them with a list of potential topics you could write about. Make sure to spell out exactly what they get from the deal: a different perspective for their audience and a day off of writing content.Β Who doesn’t want a day off every once in a while, right?
Article Marketing and SEO
In many larger markets, article marketing has been done so often by affiliates and bloggers that it’s nearly impossible to get ranked.
In smaller markets, however, often times you’ll still be using low-competition keywords that aren’t actively being targeted by other marketers.
Take advantage of this edge. It’s low-hanging fruit traffic every niche blogger can make use of.
These are three techniques that are especially effective in niche markets. You can build a profitable blog using even just one of these techniques.

I’m glad you had article marketing as one of your techniques in this post. That is a method that I have used a lot in the past. But I had heard that it wasn’t working so well anymore because of the Google changes. Thank you for the advice.

I think guest blogging is still very a very effective method to promote your blog. Guest blogging is part of your SEO strategy.
It’s hard to get readers to help promote the info, i guess getting them to share it would work but do you have any tips moving forward into 2015? any other pointers that you deem relevant for the new year?
I enjoyed this post because it relates so directly to my skills. I do find, of all SEO strategies that article writing can be the largest amount of work. Mentioning the relevance of keywords is very helpful, perhaps I should relook the keywords I use.
Thank you for the easy-to-follow and enjoyable content.
Very well written article. All of them may not apply to me (I don’t know who would want a sample of decorative hardware π ) I can see how to use most of them. Thank you for the tips I didn’t think of!
Glad this was helpful, John!
Thankx for this – the one i use the most is definitely the Guest Blogging mainly because i love to bring the experts in to share their stories. Two ways this has been really popular on my blog have been:
[1] Relationships posts – anything from Singleness to dating to being married, i have had people sharing strengths, weaknesses, creative ideas and had some really amazing response: https://brettfish.wordpress.com/relationshippy-things
[2] Taboo Topics: Topics that are really important but that people rarely speak about – from Singleness to Losing a Baby to Adoption to Mixed Race relationships, there are so many of these and i have found some incredible people to share their stories which have helped a lot of people feeling like they were alone in different areas: https://brettfish.wordpress.com/taboo-topics-contents-page
So that one has definitely been the win for me
