Deciding on a domain for your blog can be pretty intimidating. Wondering what factors to consider? What elements make for good domain names?
Here’s a quick list of characteristics to consider when choosing a blog domain:
- Length: Typically, you will find that the shorter the domain name, the better.
- Style: What style will your blog be – professional, newsy, educational, just for pure fun? Your blog domain could be a reader’s first impression to your blog. What impression do you want to give them?
- Easy to Remember : Your domain should be something your readers will remember. You might want to stay away from words that are difficult to spell or pronounce. But you also don’t want to be so generic, your blog name gets lost in the shuffle.
- It Matches Your Blog Title: Along the lines of the last point, this is important because you want your readers to remember how to get back to your blog. If your blog title and your domain are different, readers might remember one or the other but probably not both.
- Topic: It’s helpful if your blog name reflects your blog topic. Is your blog title and domain name one that people can associate with your blog content?
- Hyphens: Avoiding them is recommended. Hyphens can make your domain harder to remember for your readers.
- Keywords: Consider using keywords for your blog in your blog domain. This will help make your blog more Search Engine-friendly, which will also help readers find you more easily when they are searching for topics covered by your blog.
- How does it sound? Try saying your blog name out-loud. Have someone else say your blog name so you can hear it. Does it sound good? Is it easy to say? You’re going to be talking about your blog a lot so you want a title that’s not a tongue-twister. Make sure it’s fun to say!
What’s your domain name? Do you have a story behind it? Please share in the comments below.

My domain name is the same as my on-line persona. It fits my blog’s theme of light-hearted, imperfect parenting.
What does Blogelina mean?
I actually don’t know that Blogelina means anything in particular – I chose it because I loved the sound of it. It sounded like it would be a blog written for women about blogging… I can definitely relate to your domain, though – it’s a great choice as it makes you relate-able to other moms. What mom thinks she’s even close to being a super mom? 😉
I am brand new to blogging and have yet to pick a name. Still working on it. I love Nota Supermom….very clever!
Pickles-N-Peppers.com is mine. Pickles & Peppers is my blog name. I’m a “pickleaholic” and love pickled banana peppers too. I told my family I was writing a blog called Pickles & Peppers and they all said that’s definitely me to a T. Now if I can narrow down my blog since I’ve been all over the map. I have a plan for this year. I’m going to do what I am really interested in, track the numbers and see how they correlate. We’ll see.
Love the name! Super cute!! Good luck with your plan!
