If you’re a blogger, you likely rely on Pinterest for a large chunk of your traffic. However, not so long ago, Pinterest released what they call their “Smart Feed,” which attaches certain attributes to Pins. What that means is that your Pin should be of value. Pinterest’s new algorithm looks at a few different things when rating it for other viewers – They take into a account the quality of the pin, and the quality of the source that the pin is coming from (You can read more about the new algorithm, here).

This was so helpful! I’ve been a Pinterest user for years now, but just as a pinner and not as someone adding content. Since Smart Feed has entered the scene, I’ve noticed a hugely negative difference in my Pinterest repins (both for my content and content I’ve simply repinned) and haven’t been able to make sense of it. What I’m pinning hasn’t changed, but less people are seeing it.
As a newer blogger, it’s tough to instantly have the kind of traffic and following it takes to be Smart Feed-worthy. I’m definitely going to see deleting previous pins helps. It makes sense, but I would’ve never thought of it. Thanks for sharing!

First off, this was a very informative post. I got great tips from it. But secondly, this quote:
“With Pinterest Smart Feed, users no longer see the Pins that were most recently shared, they see the BEST pins for their interests, which means you need to optimize your pins. The Pin Junkie shares tips on how to unlock Pinterest’s Smart Feed and Get Your Pins Seen.”
Perfectly explains the frustrations of those of us hoping to provide original content. I’m not so sure that Smart Feed is a good thing for my blog. I’ve been working diligently with biweekly blog posts for the past few months and even though I have already figured out and applied many of these techniques I have still yet to be noticed on Pinterest. That is really discouraging.
Thanks for the tips! I appreciate them. I’m a go-getter and I have no intention of quitting.
It can definitely be frustrating, Brandi! But, don’t give up! It is a mix of trial and error, for sure. One of the things that I have found that works really well, is changing up the description of a pin, to say more than just the post title. Using a couple of keywords in there and then adding the title at the end. Good luck to you!
I’ve really been trying to focus on using Pinterest to drive traffic to my blog since I recently noticed that it’s one of my top referrers. This round-up is just what I needed to get my action plan together, thanks!
