The beauty with starting a blog is that you can take it in virtually any direction you want. The internet has made it incredibly easy to start up a blog and share your voice with the world. Where many bloggers fall short, especially as they’re starting out blogging is acting like they’re only talking to themselves. There are numerous best practices in terms of promoting a blog, a few of which I’ve listed below.
Goals Matter When Starting a Blog
If you’re just starting a blog now, or have been blogging for years, one of the first steps is to determine the goals of your blog. Are you viewing your blog as a simple journal of activities in your personal life, or are you wanting to reach other people and make connections that will help grow your blog? Neither of these choices is inherently good or bad, but it’s a choice that will ultimately help you determine the purpose you have for your blog. This will help you determine who you’re truly writing for, which will ultimately help your writing. You’ve likely heard the phrase that content is king and if your goals are not clear it’s likely to come out in your writing. I know this may seem like a daunting task, but asking yourself some simple questions related to what you want will simplify it greatly.
Social Media is the Name of the Game
If you’ve made it this far, I am assuming you’re wanting to know how to grow your audience of one to many, many more. There’s one simple way to bring readers, and potentially advertisers, assuming you want to make money blogging, to your blog – social media. Social media is to a blogger what a megaphone is to a cop directing traffic — it attracts attention. If you’re looking at how to promote your blog, then social media is a great and often free way to bring readers to your site. When you add that to solid content you create sticky readers who’ll come back for more and, in turn, possibly share your blog posts and thus increase your reach. Don’t let the thought of using social media scare you, it’s one of the best tools you can use to bring people to your blog.
Think About Your Audience
If determining your goals is one of the first things to do when starting a blog, then considering who your audience is will be a close second. In regards to social media, you want to be active where your audience is. Are many of your readers stay at home moms? Then you might want to target Pinterest or Facebook. If they’re younger professionals, then it’s all about Twitter. Find a few platforms and hit the ground running. There are a few keys though, don’t just share your blog posts; instead, be selfless in promoting others. Find other bloggers you appreciate and share their posts, but also remember it’s not just about sharing posts, but to interact with others. Use social media as a way to grow relationships and network with other bloggers. This is especially important if you’re just starting a blog as it exponentially grows your audience which is essential for the long term success of your blog.
Are you considering starting a blog, or do you current run one? How do you promote your blog?
