Gaining free traffic from the search engines is the main benefit of using SEO (search engine optimization) for your blog. Although the word sounds rather “techy,” it’s actually quite easy to learn a few SEO skills to use for your blog. Invest a little time in learning some simple SEO techniques, and you’ll reap great rewards from the search engines that will make it well worth the extra effort.
How to Use Keywords in your Blog Posts
There’s no need to be a SEO expert when writing content for your blog. Using beginner basics can get your blog reaping the rewards of some free traffic from search engines very quickly. Simply doing basic keyword research using Google’s External Keyword Tool can help you find some good keywords to target for your topic.
- Google Keywords Tool Tip: To find more narrowed down information on your keyword selections, be sure to check “Only show ideas closely related to my search terms” underneath the keyword search box. And on the left sidebar, underneath Match Types, select “[Exact]”. After you process your search, scroll down the list of word phrases and try to select one ore more that are at least 1,000 monthly searches but have low competition.
When writing your content, add your keyword phrase in your article title, once in your first paragraph and at least one or two times more within your article when possible (but be careful not to overdo it when adding keywords – this can penalize you more than not using keywords). Do not go overboard with your keyword phrases as this will appear as spamming to the search engines.
It’s recommended that the content be your main focus when writing your blog posts. The flow of your articles should be read smoothly and intelligently. Only use your keyword phrases in an appropriate manner that follows the proper grammar rules. When the quality of your content takes precedence over your keywords, you’ll gain loyal readers who will “enjoy” reading your content.
Remember, you’re really writing for your readers, not the search engines.
